Tonight, at the central indoor stadium in Cairo, the Egyptian women's national volleyball team made history by beating Kenya 3-0 in the final of the African Women's Volleyball Championship (CAVB) to win the title and secure the continent's first berth for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. With this victory, Egypt concluded the tournament undefeated, while Kenya won the silver medal and Cameroon claimed the bronze, both thereby securing qualification for the 2027 FIVB World Cup.
The final unfolded in a dramatic fashion right from the first set. Egypt started with their strongest line-up, leading 8-5 at the first technical timeout. However, Kenya fought back fiercely thanks to solid blocking and the power of outside hitter Veronica Adhiambo Oluoch. At a critical stage of the first set, with the score tied at 22-22, Nada Ahmed Houssameldein (No. 9) produced two delicate tips to score points, giving Egypt the lead. Then, a direct service ace by Mariam Metwally Mohamed Morsy sealed the set at 25-23.
In the second set, Kenya performed better as Elizabeth Marian Sokoiyo delivered powerful spikes from the left side. The East African team led 16-14 at the second technical timeout, prompting Egypt's coach to call a timeout. Immediately after, Nada shone again with attacks from the middle of the net, along with excellent blocking, helping Egypt come from behind to lead 20-18. Although Kenya saved two set points, Egypt eventually won the set 25-22 thanks to a successful block at the net.
The third set saw a strong resurgence from Kenya as they led 16-14, but Egypt demonstrated the composure of a great team. With the guidance of playmaker Mariam Morsy, they organized fluent middle attacks, repeatedly exploiting the opponent's center court. At the crucial moment, Nada Ahmed once again proved the pillar, scoring three consecutive points to give Egypt a 23-20 lead. Kenya could not turn the tide and lost the set 21-25, thereby conceding the title.
According to tournament statistics, Nada Ahmed Houssameldein was the top scorer in the final with 14 points, including 2 kill blocks and 1 ace. Her teammate Mariam Metwally Mohamed Morsy tallied 12 points and played a key role in orchestrating the game. On Kenya's side, Veronica Adhiambo Oluoch scored 11 points (2 aces, 1 kill block), while Elizabeth Marian Sokoiyo added 10 points.
With this result, Egypt qualified for the Olympic women's volleyball tournament for the first time in history, becoming Africa's sole representative in Los Angeles. Meanwhile, Kenya and Cameroon, who secured the bronze medal after beating Senegal in the third-place match, earned tickets to the 2027 FIVB World Cup. Under the tournament regulations, the African champions secure a direct Olympic spot, while the next two teams earn World Cup berths.
This has been a highly successful CAVB championship for African women's volleyball, as three national teams secured places in major international competitions. Egypt has shown remarkable progress in recent years thanks to deep investment in youth development and tactics. Kenya, despite failing to defend their title, still proved themselves as a leading force on the continent.
From my perspective as someone who has followed many African championships, the key to Egypt's success lies in their ability to operate a flexible tactical system. They do not rely too heavily on a single star but distribute the ball wisely, maximizing the strength of their attacking wings. Kenya, although physically stronger, lacked variety in attack, making them easier to read.
Looking ahead, Egypt's presence at the 2028 Olympics will be a major boost for the development of African women's volleyball. However, to compete at the Olympic level, the team and their coach will need to work hard on improving physical fitness, technical-tactical skills, and international experience. For Kenya and Cameroon, they should maximize the time from now to the 2027 World Cup to refine their rosters and aim to spring surprises on the world stage.
