Robert Milkins, former world No. 12, admits: "I disrespected the game"

At Q School's final round, one frame away from a professional card, Robert Milkins stood beside the table, cue resting on the floor. The real match begins the moment the balls touch no one. A simple safety could have kept him alive, but he chose a difficult pot, missed, and Gong Chenzhi cleared. 4-3. The same script had played out days earlier against Duane Jones. After 31 years on the World Snooker Tour, a former world No. 12 had lost his tour card. Milkins, 50, had won Gibraltar Open 2026 and Welsh Open 2026, reached No. 12 in 2026 and collected a £150,000 European Series bonus. Two seasons later he fell outside the top 64. In an interview with SnookerHQ.com, filmed at the Snooker 900 on Pluto TV, he admitted, "I disrespected the game." His diagnosis was not technical but attitudinal: lazy, lost his head, no longer in love with snooker. His most frightening line: "I don't know how I'm going to get it back." The statistics that matter: two 4-3 defeats at Q School, a 0-4 loss to Stuart Watson at Q Tour Event 1, one win as a top-up player at China Open qualifying. Milkins says he has a habit of not pushing on when he reaches the top, and he has done it before. Counselling once helped him. Now his motivation appears financial: "When you run out of money, you start working again." The contrarian angle: the Q Tour rewards consistency, the very quality he admits he lacks. From Bulgaria onward, watch deciders. If he wins a close match, he can still come back. If not, his story becomes a warning about talent without love. The question is not whether he can pot balls at 50. It is whether he can push on when the frame hangs in the balance.
